Kathmandu to Kalinchowk: Road, Time and Snow Season

By Uncover Nepal Team · Checked by our Kathmandu travel team · Last checked 27 October 2026

Leave Kathmandu at first light and the Araniko Highway carries you east past Bhaktapur, Banepa and Dhulikhel. Beyond Dolalghat you turn off at Khadichaur, and the road climbs in long bends towards Charikot. Above Charikot the tarmac ends, and the last stretch to Kuri is slow going.

Kathmandu to Kalinchowk is about 150 km by road. You follow the Araniko Highway east, turn off at Khadichaur, climb to Charikot, about 130 km from Kathmandu, then drive about 18 km of rough hill road to Kuri. On our trip it takes about six to seven hours each way. Drive in daylight.

For lower, gentler escapes from the city, see our guide to hill stations in Nepal. This guide covers the journey itself. For the temple, the cable car and the walk up, read our Kalinchowk guide.

How far is it from Kathmandu to Kalinchowk?

It is about 150 km from Kathmandu to Kuri, the village below Kalinchowk, by the cable car company's figure. Charikot, the Dolakha district headquarters, is about 130 km out, and the last climb to Kuri is about 18 km.

Leg Roughly how far What to expect
Kathmandu to Dhulikhel, Araniko Highway About 30 km Roadworks and slow traffic
Dhulikhel to Khadichaur, via Panchkhal and Dolalghat No reliable figure published Main highway east
Khadichaur to Charikot, via Mude 55 km Paved, winding climb
Charikot to Kuri About 18 km Rough, mostly unpaved, slow
Whole journey About 150 km Six to seven hours each way on our trip

Khadichaur or Lamosangu? Some route notes name Lamosangu, but current reporting puts the turn-off at Khadichaur, where the Araniko carries on north towards Tibet and your road turns east. The road keeps its old name: the Department of Roads still calls it the Lamosangu-Jiri road.

How long does the drive take?

On our trip the drive from Kathmandu to Kuri takes about six to seven hours each way. The first day reaches Charikot in roughly five to six hours, with lunch on the way.

What adds time:

  • Roadworks between Bhaktapur and Dhulikhel.
  • Festival traffic, such as Tihar, 8 to 12 November 2026.
  • Snow or rain, above all between Charikot and Kuri.
  • Diverted traffic when the BP Highway is cut, as in October 2025.

A same-day return means most of the day in a vehicle, so we plan a night at Kuri. Our Kathmandu day trips guide lists places that suit a single day.

What is the road like?

The road is paved from Kathmandu to Charikot, and the last 18 km to Kuri is a rough, mostly unpaved hill road. A June 2026 ride report calls the tarmac good, with minor potholes.

Mist in the valleys below forested hills at dawn in Dolakha
Dolakha's hills at dawn, on the road towards Charikot.

Above Charikot it changes. In April 2024 The Rising Nepal described a gravelled road the rural municipality was working to blacktop, and reports from December 2025 and October 2026 still call it off-road. The municipality's chairman explained the hold-up:

"We need Rs. 50 to 70 million to complete blacktopping the road and we are asking provincial government for support."

Arjun Prasad Siwakoti, chairman, Kalinchowk Rural Municipality, to The Rising Nepal, 12 April 2024

How can you travel from Kathmandu to Kalinchowk?

Go by private jeep or car, by bus to Charikot then jeep, or on an organised trip.

Option How it works Watch for
Private jeep or car Door to door; a 4x4 for the last section in winter No reliable hire price found, so ask for a quote
Bus, then jeep Bus from Jadibuti to Charikot, then a jeep or private vehicle to Kuri No current, dated source for a scheduled bus to Kuri
Organised trip Drive, stops and a night at Kuri planned for you Ask how dates move if snow closes the road

Taking the bus. Buses for Charikot run from the Araniko route bus park at Jadibuti, on the eastern side of Kathmandu. Do not go to the Old Bus Park at Ratnapark: long-route buses for Dolakha moved out in 2021. Fares rose twice in 2026, so we print none. Ask locally at Jadibuti the day before for the counter and the fare.

Our Kalinchowk and Palanchowk Bhagwati tour is the organised version, with Palanchowk Bhagwati on the drive back.

Where can you stop on the way?

Each stop adds time, so pick one or two.

  • Dhulikhel. About 30 km from Kathmandu at 1,550 m; both the BP and Araniko highways pass through it.
  • Palanchowk Bhagwati. Turn off at Lamidanda, after Panchkhal, and drive 9 km uphill to the temple, about 55 km from Kathmandu. On our trip we stop here on the way back.
  • Charikot. The district headquarters, with the last reliable fuel before Kuri.
  • Dolakha Bhimsen (Bhimeshwor). In Dolakha Bazaar, about 4 km east of Charikot; the Nepal Tourism Board lists it as a famous Hindu temple, chief deity of local traders.
  • Kharidhunga. On the climb into Dolakha, around 2,700 m by the Kathmandu Post's figure, with winter snow and views of Rolwaling and Langtang.

When does snow close the road to Kalinchowk?

Snow season at Kalinchowk usually runs from December to March, and it varies by winter. Snow can also block the road.

  • February 2019: some 700 tourists were stranded at Kalinchowk after snow, and a joint Nepal Police and Armed Police Force team brought them out; some were stuck on the way (Setopati).
  • December 2021: snowfall disrupted transport between Kathmandu and Dolakha, with snow falling at Kharidhunga (The Himalayan Times).

One operator warns that winter snow can close the last section of road. Some winters bring little: by early February 2025 Dolakha had had none.

Our Kalinchowk guide covers Kuri in snow. For where to see snow in Nepal and ideas for the season, see Nepal in December.

How do you plan the drive, step by step?

  1. Check the road the day before: night travel, festival traffic and the snow forecast.
  2. Leave early and drive in daylight.
  3. Choose a 4x4 above Charikot in winter or after rain.
  4. Fill the tank at Charikot, the last reliable fuel station.
  5. Carry rupees in cash. Do not count on a cash machine at Kuri.
  6. Keep essentials within reach: water, snacks, a warm layer, a charged power bank and your medicines. Visitors have been stuck on this road before.
  7. Keep a spare day in snow season, and check the cable car is running before you plan around it.
  8. If snow traps you, stay with your vehicle or lodge, keep warm and follow police instructions.

Will you feel the altitude?

You might. You go from about 1,300 to 1,400 m in Kathmandu to Kuri, published as 3,200 m, in one day. The CDC says unacclimatised travellers sleeping at 2,450 m (8,000 ft) or higher are at risk. Dhulikhel and Charikot are below that line; Kuri, and the temple above 3,700 m, are well above it.

  • Walk slowly, drink water and avoid alcohol the first evening.
  • Know the symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness and poor sleep.
  • Never go higher with symptoms; drive back down towards Charikot if they get worse.
  • Ask your doctor about preventive medicine such as acetazolamide.

Garlic soup is a comforting tradition, not a proven cure. See how to avoid altitude sickness.
