Overview
This Boudhanath and Tarebhir hike pairs one of the largest stupas in the world with a short walk up to a cliff-top viewpoint on the edge of the valley. You start at Boudhanath, the heart of Tibetan Buddhist Kathmandu, visiting the great stupa and the nearby Shechen Monastery, then drive to the village of Jagdol and hike up the ridge to Tarebhir, where prayer flags line a cliff that looks back over the whole city. It is an easy way to combine culture, a gentle hike and a wide view in half a day.

Boudhanath is where most visitors meet Tibetan Buddhist Kathmandu, and Tarebhir is where locals go for a quick hike and a view. This half-day links the two: the great stupa and a monastery down in the city, then a short climb up a ridge on the edge of the valley to a cliff hung with prayer flags. It is one of the easiest ways to pair a cultural morning with a proper walk and a wide view, without leaving the Kathmandu Valley.
What the Boudhanath and Tarebhir hike covers
You begin at Boudhanath, joining the clockwise walk around the base of the stupa before visiting the nearby Shechen Monastery. From there it is a short drive to the village of Jagdol, where the hike begins: a steady climb up the ridge, through terraces and forest, to the Tarebhir cliff. You stop at the top for lunch and the view, then walk back down to Jagdol and drive home. Your guide sets the pace and can shorten the climb for anyone who would rather.
Boudhanath and its monasteries
Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world and the centre of the Tibetan Buddhist community in Nepal. Pilgrims circle it clockwise, spinning prayer wheels beneath the painted eyes on the dome, and the lanes around it are full of monasteries, workshops and rooftop cafes. The Shechen Monastery, a short way off, is one of the more beautiful, with detailed murals and a large prayer hall, and makes a quieter counterpoint to the busy stupa. The hike up to Tarebhir
Tarebhir means cliff, and that is what waits at the top of the ridge above Jagdol: a rocky edge strung with prayer flags, looking straight back across the Kathmandu Valley. The climb takes about an hour and a half to two hours through farmland and forest, with a few steady uphill stretches but nothing technical. It is a favourite short hike for people who live in the city, quiet on weekdays, and on a clear day the view runs from the valley floor to the surrounding hills and, in the best conditions, the Himalaya beyond.
Best time to go and what to know
October to April brings the clearest air and the widest views from the ridge. The monsoon, June to September, is green and quiet but often cloudy. Wear walking shoes with grip, bring water and sun protection, and dress modestly for the stupa and the monastery, with shoulders and knees covered. The Boudhanath entry fee is not in the price.
