Overview
This Upper Mustang tour by road drives deep into Nepal's old walled kingdom over five days, reaching the restricted high desert beyond the Himalaya without trekking. From Kathmandu you head to Pokhara, then up the Kali Gandaki gorge through Jomsom and past Marpha before crossing into Upper Mustang. Permits and why they matter
Upper Mustang is a restricted area. Beyond Kagbeni you need a special restricted-area permit as well as the Annapurna Conservation Area permit, and the restricted permit can only be issued through a registered agency for a group travelling together, not to solo independent travellers. We handle all of this, but it is why the route is fixed and why your passport and photos are needed in advance.
Altitude, road and weather
This is a high, remote drive. The Korala border reaches 4,660 metres and Lo Manthang sits near 3,840 metres, so cold, thin air and strong winds are the norm; pace yourself and keep warm layers to hand. The road is rough and dusty with long off-road sections, and afternoons are windy, so days start early. Because Mustang is in the rain shadow, it stays dry even in the monsoon.
