Overview

An Everest mountain flight is the fastest way to stand level with the Himalaya without a single step of trekking. On this early-morning flight from Kathmandu, a small fixed-wing plane runs the length of the range, past roughly twenty of the world's highest peaks, from Langtang Lirung across to Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Chamlang. The plane is kept half-full so every passenger has a guaranteed window seat, and you are welcome up to the cockpit for the head-on view of Everest. In under an hour you see what most people spend two weeks trekking for, and we handle your private hotel pickup and drop.

Good to know

On a clear morning, yes. Everest is the highlight of the route and the crew points it out, and you can step to the cockpit for the head-on view. In poor weather the flight is delayed or rebooked rather than flown into cloud.
06About the flight

Everest Mountain Flight: what to expect

A mountain flight is the fastest, easiest way to stand face to face with the Himalaya. Instead of a two-week trek, you board a small fixed-wing plane at dawn in Kathmandu and fly east along the range, close enough to pick out individual summits, then land back in the city in time for a late breakfast. Nothing about it is strenuous. There is no walking, no altitude to acclimatise to, and no permit to arrange. For travellers short on time, travelling with children or older parents, or who simply want the mountains on their first morning, it is hard to beat.

The route and the peaks you'll see

The route runs west to east across roughly twenty of the world's highest peaks. It opens with Langtang Lirung, the closest big mountain to Kathmandu, then unfolds past Shishapangma and Cho Oyu, both over 8,000 metres, towards the main event: Mount Everest, flanked by Lhotse and, further east, Chamlang. The pilots cruise at around 21,000 feet, so the biggest peaks still rise well above the aircraft, which is what gives a mountain flight its scale. The plane is kept half-full so every passenger has a window, and it banks on the return leg so both sides of the cabin get their turn. One at a time, passengers are invited up to the cockpit for the clearest view of Everest through the windscreen.

When to fly: time of day and season

Flights depart at first light, with pickup around 5:30 AM, for one simple reason: the air is clearest early. As the day warms, cloud builds over the mountains and visibility drops, so the dawn slot gives the sharpest horizon, and it means you are back at your hotel by late morning with the day still ahead of you.
Mountain flights operate year-round, but the driest, clearest skies fall between October and April. Autumn and spring are the most reliable and popular, winter mornings are often crystal clear but colder on the ground, and the monsoon months of June to August bring cloud and the highest chance of delays. Because the whole experience hinges on the weather, it is worth planning the flight for one of your first mornings in Kathmandu, so there is room to rebook if the first attempt is clouded out.

What to expect on the day

On the day, we collect you from your hotel at around 5:30 AM and drive the short distance to the domestic terminal. After check-in there is usually some waiting, as flights are sequenced by weather and air traffic, so an early departure can slip a little. Once airborne, the flight lasts fifty minutes to an hour. Bring a camera, but spend part of the flight simply looking, because photographs never quite hold the scale. Dress for a cool early start. When you land, we transfer you back to your hotel, usually by late morning. The one honest caveat: everything depends on clear skies. If your flight is cancelled outright, you are rebooked onto the next available flight or refunded, so you never pay to fly into cloud.
