01The widest Himalayan view

Overview

This Daman viewpoint tour heads southwest of Kathmandu to the ridge that offers the widest Himalayan panorama near the valley, broken by a night beside a quiet lake. You first stop at the Kulekhani reservoir, Nepal's largest man-made lake, for a boat ride at Markhu, then climb the old Tribhuvan Highway to Daman at 2,322 metres. From its hilltop view tower the peaks line up in a long unbroken wall, on a clear day stretching from Dhaulagiri in the west past Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang and Ganesh Himal to Everest in the east. You stay the night to be there for sunrise, when the whole range turns gold. It is a two-day mix of a peaceful lake and the biggest mountain view in the region, with no trekking required.

Good to know

October to March gives the clearest skies and the most reliable Himalayan views from the ridge, with cold, crisp mornings ideal for sunrise. Spring brings rhododendron colour to the surrounding forest; the monsoon months often bury the panorama in cloud.

Complete guide

If you want the single widest sweep of the Himalaya you can reach from Kathmandu without a trek, it is Daman. A ridge village on the old Tribhuvan Highway, it looks out on a mountain wall from Dhaulagiri to Everest, and paired with a boat ride on the Kulekhani reservoir it makes an easy two-day escape. Here is how the trip comes together.

What the Daman viewpoint tour covers

The trip runs southwest from Kathmandu to the Kulekhani reservoir for boating at Markhu, then up to Daman for a night on the ridge and a sunrise from its view tower. It is built entirely around one great mountain view and a quiet lake, with the overnight stay there to catch the peaks at dawn rather than through midday haze. For a Himalayan sunrise on the opposite, eastern rim of the valley, the Nagarkot sunrise and Bhaktapur tour makes a natural companion.

Kulekhani reservoir on the way

The first stop softens the drive. Kulekhani, or Indra Sarovar, is the largest man-made lake in Nepal, formed by a hydropower dam and set among wooded hills, and the lakeside village of Markhu offers boating and a waterside lunch. It is a calm, green interlude before the road turns uphill towards the mountains, and a good stretch of the legs after the morning's driving.

Daman and its Himalayan panorama

Daman sits at 2,322 metres and exists, for visitors, for one thing: the view. Its hilltop tower and telescope-equipped resorts frame a panorama that on a clear morning runs from Dhaulagiri in the west through Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang to Everest in the east. Sunrise is the moment to be there, so you stay the night on the cold ridge and climb the tower before dawn. Beyond the peaks there are quiet gardens, rhododendron forest and the small Risheshwar Mahadev temple to fill the morning.

Who this trip suits

This suits anyone who wants the biggest possible mountain view with no trekking and only a half-day of driving: families, couples, photographers and first-time visitors alike. The trade-offs are the winding hill road and the cold ridge night, both easily managed with an overnight stay and warm clothes. Travellers who prefer a hill walk to a viewpoint can look at the Changu Narayan to Nagarkot hike for a gentler, on-foot version of the same idea.
