Bishnudwar to Budhanilkantha Hike via Dadagaon

2 days
Starts & ends in Kathmandu
01Overnight village hike

Overview

This Bishnudwar Dadagaon hike turns the popular day walk above Budhanilkantha into a slow two-day escape with a night in a hill village. You start at Budhanilkantha at about 1,400 metres, where a great stone Vishnu lies asleep in a pond, then climb into the forest of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Bishnudwar, a holy spring and small waterfall held to be the source of the Bishnumati river. Rather than turning straight back, you carry on up to the village of Dadagaon for the night, with quiet valley views and a real taste of hill life. The second morning you walk back down through the forest to Budhanilkantha. It is a gentle, green trip and an unhurried alternative to the single-day version.

Good to know

It is an easy to moderate forest hike spread over two short days, with a steady climb to Bishnudwar and up to Dadagaon on the first day and an easier, mostly downhill walk back on the second. There is nothing technical, and splitting it over two days makes it gentler than the single-day version. Your guide sets the pace.

Complete guide

The forest above Budhanilkantha is one of the easiest green escapes from Kathmandu, and most people see it on a single day out to the Bishnudwar spring and back. This trip slows the same walk right down. You climb to Bishnudwar, then keep going up to the hill village of Dadagaon for a night, and only return the next morning. It swaps a busy afternoon for a quiet evening in the hills, and it is one of the gentlest overnight hikes you can do from the edge of the city.

What the Bishnudwar Dadagaon hike covers

The walk starts at Budhanilkantha at about 1,400 metres, with its famous Sleeping Vishnu, and climbs into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Bishnudwar, a spring and small waterfall held to be the source of the Bishnumati river. From there you carry on up to Dadagaon for the night, then retrace the forest trail down to Budhanilkantha the next day. Your guide handles the park entry and the village stay and keeps the pace easy, so the two days feel unhurried rather than long.

Bishnudwar and the forest to Dadagaon

The heart of the trip is the forest. The trail climbs gently through shaded woods to the spring at Bishnudwar, cool even on a warm day and rarely out of earshot of running water. Above it the path continues to Dadagaon, a small hill settlement where the valley opens out below. This is the same protected forest climbed by the Shivapuri Peak day hike, though this walk stays low and easy rather than pushing for the summit.

A night in the hills

Staying at Dadagaon is what sets this trip apart from the day walk. Evenings are quiet, with the lights of the valley below and the dark forest above, and a simple village dinner. It is a small, genuine taste of hill life within reach of the city. If you would rather keep the same walk to a single day and skip the overnight, our Budhanilkantha and Bishnudwar hike visits the spring and returns the same afternoon.

Best time to go and what to know

October to April is the most reliable window: clear, dry and pleasant for walking, with the best valley views from Dadagaon. The monsoon, June to September, turns the forest a deep green but makes the trail muddy and slippery, and leeches can appear after rain. Wear shoes with grip, bring a warm layer for the village evening and dress modestly for the temple. Bishnudwar sits inside a national park, so a small entry fee may apply, paid at the gate.
