01Snow and a mountain shrine

Overview

This Kalinchowk tour trades the valley for a high, cold ridge in Dolakha, where a small Bhagwati shrine sits at 3,842 metres above a sea of hills. You drive east from Kathmandu to Charikot and up to Kuri, the last village below the summit, and stay the night among rhododendron and pine. In the morning a short cable car ride, or a steep half-hour climb, lifts you to the Kalinchowk Bhagwati temple for a sweeping line of Himalayan peaks and, from December to February, a landscape often under snow. On the way home you break the drive at the hilltop Palanchowk Bhagwati temple, one of the valley rim's revered Shakti shrines. It is a two-day mix of pilgrimage, mountain air and, in winter, the easiest snow near Kathmandu.

Good to know

October to March gives the clearest mountain views and the coldest, driest air. If you want snow, December to February is the season, when Kuri and the shrine are often white; autumn is best for sharp Himalayan skylines without the deep cold.

Complete guide

Kalinchowk is where people from Kathmandu go to touch snow and a Himalayan skyline in the same short trip. A small Bhagwati shrine crowns a 3,842-metre ridge in Dolakha, reached now by cable car, with a night in the village of Kuri below it. Here is how the two days come together and what to expect on the ridge.

What the Kalinchowk tour covers

The trip runs east from Kathmandu to Charikot, up to Kuri village for the night, and to the Kalinchowk Bhagwati shrine the next morning by cable car or on foot, before returning past the Palanchowk Bhagwati temple. It is built around one high viewpoint and one overnight, so most of each day is spent on the road and on the ridge rather than rushing between sights. If you would rather stay closer to the valley for your mountain sunrise, the Nagarkot sunrise and Bhaktapur tour reaches a Himalayan horizon in a single easy morning.

Kuri village and the shrine

Kuri is the cold, simple settlement of lodges below the summit, set among pine and rhododendron and, in winter, deep in snow. From here the cable car lifts you to the ridge near the shrine in minutes, or you can climb the steep trail in about half an hour. The Kalinchowk Bhagwati temple itself is a modest stone-and-trident shrine, but its setting at 3,842 metres, ringed by prayer flags and a 360-degree wall of hills and peaks, is the real draw.

Snow, mountains and timing

The season shapes the trip completely. From December to February this is the nearest dependable snow to Kathmandu, which is exactly why so many families make the winter drive up. Autumn, from October, trades the snow for the sharpest mountain views and slightly kinder roads. Whenever you go, dress for real cold on the ridge, take the altitude gently, and start early on the second morning for the clearest skyline before cloud builds.

Palanchowk Bhagwati and who this suits

The drive home breaks at Palanchowk Bhagwati, a hilltop Shakti temple in Kavre with its own long pilgrimage tradition and wide views over the terraced Panchkhal valley, a fitting bookend to the high shrine above. This tour suits pilgrims, families and anyone chasing snow and mountains without a trek, as long as they are ready for a cold, high day and long hours in the vehicle. For a gentler valley-rim hill walk with the same appetite for a viewpoint, the Changu Narayan to Nagarkot hike is an easier companion trip.
