Lumbini to Kathmandu (and Back): Flight or Road

14 min read Posted 01 Nov 2026Updated 01 Nov 2026
Aircraft on the apron at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, where domestic flights to Bhairahawa for Lumbini begin

The road west from Kathmandu climbs over the valley rim at Nagdhunga, drops through river gorges to Mugling, then meets the Terai, Nepal's flat southern plains, at Narayangadh. From Butwal it runs on across farmland to Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. The plane covers the same ground in under an hour.

Lumbini to Kathmandu, or the other way round, comes down to two choices. Fly between Kathmandu and Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa, about 25 to 35 minutes in the air and about 18 km from Lumbini. Or go by road: about 280 km and 10 to 11 hours by bus, by the Lumbini Development Trust's figures.

For the site itself, see our Lumbini travel guide. This page covers getting there and back.

Should you fly or go by road from Lumbini to Kathmandu?

Fly if time matters most: the flight takes about 25 to 35 minutes, against most of a day and often more on the road. Go by road if you are watching your budget, want to stop at Chitwan or Pokhara on the way, or would rather not depend on flight schedules. A private car sits between the two.

How does the Kathmandu to Bhairahawa flight work?

Flights leave from the domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and land at Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, also called Siddharthanagar. Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines fly the route, with several flights a day between them, each about 25 to 35 minutes.

"Regular flights connect Kathmandu to Bhairahawa from Tribhuvan International Airport every day."

Lumbini Development Trust, Lumbini page, updated 28 September 2026

What to know before you fly:

  • Times differ by source: Shree Airlines says 25 minutes, Buddha Air 30, the LDT 35.
  • There is no published KTM to Lumbini flight price. Fares vary by day and are set by the airlines; check with the airline. This is information only: we do not sell flight tickets.
  • No international flights. Bhairahawa opened as an international airport on 16 May 2022, but on 12 October 2026 the airport's information officer told Peoples' Review: "No airline currently has a scheduled international service at the airport." Fly into Kathmandu; our guide to arriving at Kathmandu airport covers that side.
  • Weather decides the day: flights can be held in poor visibility, so avoid tight same-day connections.

What is the road route from Kathmandu to Lumbini?

The road from Kathmandu to Lumbini runs west over Nagdhunga, down to Mugling, south to Narayangadh, then west along the East-West Highway to Butwal and across the plains to Lumbini. The LDT puts the bus journey at about 280 km and around 10 to 11 hours; In Your Pocket gives about 290 km and 8 to 10 hours.

Stage Distance What it is like
Nagdhunga to Mugling 94.62 km (Republica) Out of the valley and down the river gorges; Mugling is where the Pokhara road splits off
Mugling to Narayangadh About 33 to 36 km A narrow gorge, prone to landslides and jams
Narayangadh to Butwal About 113 to 114 km Widened road, now about two hours (Ratopati)
Butwal to Lumbini No figure we could confirm Flat, busy roads across the plains

The stage figures come from different sources, so read them as a guide to where the time goes, not a sum.

Tourist or public bus

Buses leave from Gongabu Bus Park in Kathmandu. The LDT's Lumbini page lists departures at 7 am and 7 pm and tickets of about NPR 1,500 to 2,000. That page is undated, so check times and fares locally before you travel; In Your Pocket (April 2026) gives roughly the same tourist-bus fare. Public buses stop to pick up and drop passengers: on the Narayangadh to Butwal stretch, the chairman of one bus company told Ratopati the trip now takes about three hours even with those stops.

Private car

A car and driver lets you choose your stops. We found no reliable door-to-door time, so we give none. On the Narayangadh to Butwal section, Ratopati reported some private drivers crossing in 1 hour 30 minutes, and one traveller in 1 hour 44 minutes with two stops.

"It now takes only about two hours to travel from Narayangadh to Butwal."

Ratopati English, 6 August 2026

What are the roads like in late October 2026?

The Kathmandu Lumbini road is slow in the hills, quicker on the plains, and the hill sections can close after heavy rain. This is a snapshot from reports up to 31 October 2026, not a forecast: check the news, or ask us, the day before you travel.

  • Nagdhunga tunnel. The 2.68 km tunnel at the Kathmandu end opened on trial on 24 August 2026 to cars, jeeps and vans carrying up to nine passengers, 9 am to 6 pm (The Kathmandu Post). On 29 October 2026, OnlineKhabar and Meroauto reported that tolls for all vehicle types, buses included, would start on 1 November or 31 October (the two reports differ). We found no notice saying when buses may use it, so ask your bus company which road it takes.
  • Mugling to Narayangadh. A landslide above the Namsi Khola Bridge blocked this road from about 7:55 am on 27 September 2026, with clearing estimated at around two hours (ShareSansar). The Annapurna Express called the stretch "a national pain point".
  • Narayangadh to Butwal. Widening work was about 92% complete in August 2026, with only road safety work and drain connections left in places (Ratopati).
  • Weather. The monsoon withdrew from Nepal on 14 October 2026 (Department of Hydrology and Meteorology). Cyclone Arnab brought rain at the end of October; on 30 October Nepal News reported that its effects were expected to ease from the afternoon of 31 October.

Before a road day:

  1. Check road news the evening before, or ask your hotel or driver.
  2. Start early, so any delay still leaves daylight.
  3. Carry water, snacks and cash for roadside meals.

How do you get from Bhairahawa to Lumbini?

Gautam Buddha International Airport is about 18 km from Lumbini by car or taxi, by the LDT's figure, and Buddha Air calls it about a 30-minute drive. A taxi from the airport is the simplest option; local and electric buses cost less but take longer.

  • Local bus: the LDT gives 1 to 1.5 hours and NPR 80 to 100 between Lumbini and the Bhairahawa bus stand (undated page; check locally).
  • Electric bus: a service on the Lumbini to Bhairahawa to Belahiya route resumed on 1 April 2026 (The Kathmandu Post), but Ratopati reported in June 2026 that three of its five buses had been moved to other airports and the two left were out of use. Do not count on it; ask locally.
  • Electric van: an LDT service to Lumbini, Kapilavastu, Devadaha and Ramagrama, with no fares or hours published.

How many days should you spend in Lumbini?

Our team's view: plan one night and one full day as a minimum, and two nights if you want time for meditation, the outlying sites or a slower pace. A same-day return by air is possible on paper, but it leaves little time and depends on two flights and two transfers running to plan.

The Maya Devi Temple reflected in the Puskarini pond, Sacred Garden, Lumbini
The Maya Devi Temple and the Puskarini pond, best seen early in the day.

The site is bigger than people expect: the LDT's master plan covers "an area of 1x3 square miles", and In Your Pocket (April 2026) says the main sights are "too far apart to cover comfortably on foot", particularly between April and September. The LDT labels its entry fee "per day", so a second day means a second ticket.

A full day might look like this:

  • Early morning: the Maya Devi Temple and the Sacred Garden, before the heat.
  • Late morning: the monastic zone, Theravada plots to the east and Mahayana to the west; our guide to the Lumbini monasteries goes plot by plot.
  • Afternoon: the Eternal Peace Flame and the World Peace Pagoda.

A second day suits Tilaurakot, the ancient Sakya capital where Prince Siddhartha grew up, 29 km west of Lumbini by the LDT's figure, or meditation in Lumbini. See also places to visit in Lumbini.

When is the best time to go, and how hot does it get?

October to March is the most comfortable time, going by the weather records. At Bhairahawa airport, about 18 km from Lumbini, mean daily highs fall from 32.6 °C in October to 20.1 °C in January, while April to June average 35.5 to 36.6 °C.

Period Mean daily high and low Mean rainfall
October 32.6 °C / 20.6 °C 65.5 mm

December 23.5 °C / 10.2 °C 8.2 mm
January 20.1 °C / 8.7 °C 20.8 mm
April to June Highs of 35.5 to 36.6 °C June 254.7 mm
July to September Monsoon months 497.4 mm, 399.7 mm, 216.8 mm

Figures are Department of Hydrology and Meteorology normals for 1991 to 2020 at the Bhairahawa airport station, as published on Wikipedia's Siddharthanagar page.

The heat is real: Bhairahawa measured 41.5 °C in June 2026 (Kantipur). You remove your shoes before entering the temple premises, and sunlit paving gets hot, so go early and again in the late afternoon, with water, a hat and sun cream.

How do you plan the trip back to Kathmandu?

The return from Lumbini to Kathmandu works in reverse: a transfer to Bhairahawa and a flight, or a full day on the road. You can also break the journey at Chitwan, 170 km from Lumbini by the LDT's figure, or go via Pokhara, 227 km away.

  • By air: leave time for the airport transfer and book directly with the airline.
  • By road: we found no official timetable for buses back to Kathmandu, so ask your hotel the day before.
  • Via Chitwan: our Chitwan to Lumbini guide covers that road in the other direction.
  • Via Pokhara: Buddha Air lists a daily 20-minute Pokhara to Bhairahawa flight, though flight trackers show it did not run every day in October 2026. Our Pokhara to Lumbini guide covers the road.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Lumbini from Kathmandu or Pokhara?

Fly or take the road. From Kathmandu, flights to Bhairahawa take about 25 to 35 minutes, then it is about 18 km to Lumbini; buses cover about 280 km in 10 to 11 hours, by the LDT's figures. From Pokhara, Lumbini is 227 km by road, 6 to 8 hours by tourist bus according to In Your Pocket.

What is there to see in Lumbini?

The Maya Devi Temple and the Sacred Garden mark the Buddha's birthplace, which UNESCO dates traditionally to 623 BC, testified by a pillar the Mauryan emperor Asoka put up in 249 BC. The LDT divides the plan into three zones: the Sacred Garden, the Monastic Zone, and the Cultural Center and New Lumbini Village. The monastic zone holds monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries.

How many days do I need in Lumbini?

Plan at least one night and one full day; that is our team's view, not an official rule. The sights are spread across a plan of 1 by 3 square miles, and the LDT charges its entry fee per day. Add a second night for meditation, a slower pace or Tilaurakot.

When is the best time to visit Lumbini, and how hot is summer?

October to March is the most comfortable. At Bhairahawa airport, about 18 km away, mean daily highs run from 32.6 °C in October to 20.1 °C in January. April to June average 35.5 to 36.6 °C, and Bhairahawa reached 41.5 °C in June 2026. July to September is the monsoon.

When is Buddha Jayanti in Lumbini?

Buddha Jayanti, the festival of the Buddha's birth, fell on Friday 1 May 2026. The next is expected on Thursday 20 May 2027, according to Office Holidays and the Vedicmarga calendar; we could not find the government's holiday list for that year when we checked. It falls in the hot season, when May's mean daily high at Bhairahawa is 36.6 °C, so plan early starts and carry water.

How can we help you plan Lumbini from Kathmandu?

We are a Kathmandu team and can help you fit Lumbini into the rest of your trip: hotels, a car and driver for the road, and a route that adds Chitwan or Pokhara. Flights are booked with the airlines; we share flight information only. Our cultural heritage tours show the kind of trips we run, and our complete Lumbini guide covers the site.

Tell us your dates and how you would like to travel, and we will suggest an honest plan. Message us on WhatsApp or use the enquiry form.
