Helambu Trek

6 days
Starts & ends in Kathmandu
01Hyolmo villages close to Kathmandu

Overview

The Helambu trek is a short six-day teahouse trek that loops out of the Kathmandu valley into the Hyolmo Sherpa homeland north-east of the capital. From the trailhead at Sundarijal you climb to the ridge village of Chisapani, follow forested ridgelines through Kutumsang up to Tharepati at 3,690 metres, then drop into the villages of Tarkeghyang and Sermathang, where whitewashed monasteries, prayer walls and apple orchards sit among terraced fields. It stays low, needs no flight and rarely tops 3,700 metres, so it is one of the easiest ways to walk among the middle hills, meet Hyolmo culture and still catch the Langtang, Jugal and Dorje Lakpa peaks on a clear morning. The loop begins and ends with a short drive to and from Kathmandu.

Good to know

It is one of the easier Himalayan treks, graded easy to moderate. There is no technical ground and the loop rarely climbs above 3,700 metres, but you still walk five to six hours a day on ridges with real ascents and descents, so some hill-walking fitness makes it more comfortable.

Complete guide

Helambu is the trek to reach for when you want real Himalayan hills and living Buddhist culture without a flight, a long drive or serious altitude. The whole loop sits within a short drive of Kathmandu, stays under 3,700 metres and threads together the villages of the Hyolmo Sherpa, so it works as a first trek, a family trek or a quiet week when the bigger trails are busy. Here is how it works and what to know.

What the Helambu trek covers

The loop runs from Sundarijal up to the ridge at Chisapani, along forested ridgelines through Kutumsang to Tharepati at 3,690 metres, then down into the Hyolmo heartland at Tarkeghyang and Sermathang before dropping to Melamchi Bazaar and driving back to the city. The two ends are short road transfers; the middle is five days of village-to-village walking. Because it lies in the same region, it pairs naturally with the longer routes to the north, and many trekkers who enjoy Helambu return for the fuller Langtang Valley trek to see the glaciers and high yak pastures.

How hard it is and how the altitude feels

This is an easy to moderate trek. The days are shorter than on the high routes but still involve honest ridge walking, with climbs to Chisapani and Tharepati and long descents into the valleys. The high point of 3,690 metres is low enough that altitude sickness is uncommon, though you may notice the thinner air near Tharepati. Walk at a steady pace, drink plenty of water, and you will find the profile forgiving compared with the bigger Himalayan treks.

Hyolmo culture along the trail

What sets Helambu apart is the culture. Tarkeghyang and Sermathang are Hyolmo Sherpa villages with centuries-old monasteries, long mani walls, prayer flags and apple orchards, and the pace of life in them is part of the trek rather than a backdrop. Take time to visit the gompas, watch the weaving and share tea with the families who run the lodges. A guide who knows the villages turns the walk into a genuine cultural trek.

Extending your trek in the region

If you have more days and want to add altitude, Helambu connects to the sacred alpine lakes to its north-west. The Gosaikunda Lake trek climbs to a cluster of holy lakes above 4,000 metres and can be linked with Helambu over the Laurebina La pass, giving you both the high mountains and the Hyolmo villages in one continuous journey.
