Gosaikunda and Helambu Trek

10 days
Starts & ends in Kathmandu
01Sacred lakes to Hyolmo villages

Overview

The Gosaikunda Helambu trek is a ten-day teahouse trek from Kathmandu that links the sacred alpine lakes of Gosaikunda with the Hyolmo Sherpa villages of Helambu over the Laurebina La pass at 4,610 metres. After the drive to Dhunche you climb through fir and rhododendron forest to Sing Gompa and up to the Gosaikunda lakes at 4,380 metres, a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site ringed by the Langtang and Ganesh Himal peaks. Crossing the Laurebina La you drop off the high country into the villages of Melamchigaon, Tarkeghyang and Sermathang, where monasteries, mani walls and apple orchards mark the Hyolmo homeland, before descending to Melamchi and driving back to the capital. It combines a genuine high pass with rich middle-hill culture, all without a domestic flight.

05Questions

Good to know

It is graded moderate to challenging. There is no technical climbing, but the Laurebina La at 4,610 metres is a genuine high pass with a long, rough crossing day, and you walk five to seven hours on most days, so a good level of fitness and some training walks make it far more enjoyable.

Complete guide

The combined Gosaikunda and Helambu trek is one of the best traverses close to Kathmandu: a route that takes you from sacred high-altitude lakes over a real Himalayan pass and down into living Buddhist villages, all reached by road rather than a flight. It suits trekkers who want more than a gentle culture walk but are not ready for the highest base-camp routes. Here is how it works and what to know.

What the Gosaikunda Helambu trek covers

The route drives to Dhunche, climbs through Sing Gompa to the Gosaikunda lakes at 4,380 metres, then crosses the Laurebina La at 4,610 metres and descends into the Hyolmo heartland of Melamchigaon, Tarkeghyang and Sermathang before dropping to Melamchi and driving back. The two ends are road transfers; the middle is a week of high-country and village walking with one serious pass day. It sits in the same region as the classic Langtang Valley trek, and the two are often combined into a longer loop for trekkers who want the glaciers as well as the lakes and villages.

How hard it is and how the altitude feels

This is a moderate to challenging trek. The walking to Gosaikunda is steady but relentless uphill, and the Laurebina La crossing is a long day at altitude with a steep descent on the far side. You sleep above 4,300 metres before the pass, so the acclimatisation day at Gosaikunda matters; take it seriously, walk high and sleep low, and keep your pace slow. Once you are down into Helambu the altitude eases and the days become gentler.

The pilgrimage lakes and Hyolmo villages

The trek has two very different halves. Gosaikunda is a sacred site where Hindus and Buddhists come to bathe in the icy lakes, most dramatically at the August full moon, and the setting among bare peaks is starkly beautiful. On the far side, Helambu is all forest, orchards and old monasteries, with Tarkeghyang and Sermathang among the finest Hyolmo Sherpa villages in Nepal. The contrast between the high pilgrimage country and the warm village culture is what makes this route special.

Choosing between the lakes and a shorter option

If the high pass feels like a lot, you can walk to the lakes and return the way you came instead of crossing into Helambu. The standalone Gosaikunda Lake trek reaches the same sacred lakes in fewer days and avoids the Laurebina La, which is a good choice in early or late season when the pass can hold snow. The full traverse, though, is the more rewarding trip when conditions allow.
