Overview

The Langtang Valley trek is an eight-day teahouse trek that runs north from Kathmandu into Langtang National Park, one of the closest true Himalayan valleys to the capital. It begins with a long mountain drive to the trailhead at Syabrubesi, then climbs through river forest and Tamang villages along the Langtang Khola to Kyanjin Gompa at about 3,870 metres, beneath the ice of Langtang Lirung. From the settlement you climb the Kyanjin Ri viewpoint for a dawn panorama of glaciers and peaks before retracing the valley back to the road. It is graded moderate, walked on well-worn trails with simple lodges each night, and it takes in a working monastery and the local cheese factory on the way. This route suits trekkers basing themselves in Kathmandu who want big mountains without a long journey to the trailhead.

Good to know

It is graded moderate. There is no technical climbing, but most trekking days are around four to six hours with steady ascent and some long descents, and the trailhead drive is long, so a reasonable level of fitness and a few training walks beforehand make it far more comfortable.

Complete guide

Langtang is the great short-haul Himalayan valley: a national park that starts only a few hours' drive north of Kathmandu, yet delivers glaciers, yak pastures and 7,000 metre peaks. It is quieter than the Annapurna and Everest trails, walked from teahouse to teahouse, and it fits into a single week away from the capital. Here is how the trek works and what to know.

What the Langtang Valley trek covers

The route drives from Kathmandu to the trailhead at Syabrubesi at about 1,550 metres, then walks up the Langtang Khola through forest to Lama Hotel and on to the rebuilt Langtang Village. Above it lies Kyanjin Gompa at about 3,870 metres, home to a working monastery and a local cheese factory, and the base for the dawn climb up Kyanjin Ri. The two ends are travel days on a long mountain road; the heart of the trip is six days of teahouse walking up and back down the same beautiful valley.

How hard it is and how the altitude feels

This is a moderate trek rather than a technical one, but the days are honest: a steady climb up the valley, a short but sharp push to the Kyanjin Ri viewpoint at around 4,770 metres, and long descents on the way out. Because the settlements stay below 3,900 metres and you gain height gradually, serious altitude sickness is uncommon, though you may feel the thinner air on the viewpoint climb. Walk slowly, hydrate well, and treat any headache seriously. A few weeks of hill walking before you arrive makes the biggest difference.

Permits, guides and teahouses

You need the Langtang National Park entry permit and a trekkers' information card, and since April 2023 a licensed guide is mandatory in the park; we arrange all of it. Nights are spent in teahouses, family-run lodges with simple twin rooms and a warm dining room where dal bhat, noodles and soups are the staples, so you carry only a daypack. Bring a sleeping-bag liner, a power bank and small cash for charging, Wi-Fi and hot showers, which cost a little extra higher up the valley.

Other short teahouse treks to consider

If Langtang whets your appetite for more, Nepal has other accessible teahouse treks on a similar rhythm of villages, forest and mountain viewpoints. The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek in the Annapurna region reaches a famous sunrise viewpoint over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri on short walking days, making it one of the gentlest introductions to the Himalaya. For a first taste of the Everest region without the full base camp commitment, the Everest View trek with a Namche Bazaar experience puts you among the Sherpa villages and Everest panoramas on a shorter, teahouse-based route.
